Tobacco-Free Environment Statement
Authorized by Campus President

The Collier Campus of Florida SouthWestern State College does not support the position that the use of tobacco is a right and intends to prohibit the use of all tobacco products on the campus and at all institution-sponsored off-campus events as of May 12, 2010. Further, in recognition of the deleterious effects of second-hand smoke, the Campus intends to assert itself as a community leader to assure clean air and a healthy environment for all staff, students and visitors.

The Collier Campus will prohibit the use of all tobacco products, including but not limited to cigarettes, cigars, pipes and smokeless tobacco on campus and at all institution-sponsored off-campus events. The Collier Campus will also prohibit the sale of tobacco and the advertising and promotion of tobacco products on Campus. In addition, the Collier Campus will prohibit tobacco industry sponsorship of campus events and College related business. This policy will eliminate tacit approval of underĀ­age tobacco use and will lessen grounds and maintenance burdens. With the implementation of the tobacco-free environment, campus personnel will establish reasonable expectations and issue warnings to violators while offering active education programs.

Campus staff believes it is critical to educate students and prepare them for a future in which many employers restrict or prohibit smoking entirely. The Campus will provide free, accessible smoking-cessation information on campus and will publicize its availability.

Student violators will be referred to the Campus Director of Student Services for disciplinary action, and College employees will be referred to their supervisor. Organizers and attendees at public events, such as conferences, meetings, public lectures, social and cultural events, using Collier Campus facilities will be required to abide by the Tobacco-Free Policy. Organizers of such events are responsible for communicating this policy to attendees and for enforcing this policy.
