Florida House of Representatives Subcommittee Unanimously Supports Name Change

Jan 9, 2014

The Higher Education and Workforce Subcommittee in the Florida House of Representatives today unanimously approved HB 137 to rename Edison State College to Florida SouthWestern State College. The bill is sponsored by Representative Matt Hudson, whose District 80 area includes Hendry County and part of Collier County.

“We have already seen the economic benefits gained when we promote our region as a whole to attract new businesses, so changing the name of Edison State College to Florida SouthWestern State College is a natural extension of that,” said Representative Matt Hudson. “This new name will only help raise awareness of our region and the opportunities it offers.”

“This is a great step forward in the process of a name that will embrace the five counties we serve,” said Dr. Jeff Allbritten, President, Edison State College. “Florida SouthWestern State College immediately identifies the region we represent, which spans over 4,700 square miles.”

The next step, said Matthew Holliday, Director of Government Relations at Edison State College, is for the bills to continue to be heard in the committee process and they will receive a final vote in the Florida Senate and House during the spring legislative session.
