House Bill for FSW Ready for Final Approval

Feb 6, 2014

Today, House Bill 137 received unanimous support in the House Education Committee to change the name of Edison State College to Florida SouthWestern State College. The bill is sponsored by Representative Matt Hudson, whose District 80 area includes Hendry County and part of Collier County.

“The new name, Florida SouthWestern State College, is just part of the many exciting things in the near future for this college and the communities it serves,” said Representative Matt Hudson, who studied at Edison State College. “Along with the educational opportunities, especially in workforce-driven careers that this college provides to our region, I’m looking forward to cheering for the Buccaneers when the college brings athletic competition back in the fall of 2015.”

“The unanimous support we have received from both the House and Senate bills by Representative Hudson and Senator Richter is greatly appreciated,” said Dr. Jeff Allbritten, President, Edison State College. “The decision to change the name of the college was made only after fully exploring our options and knowing the very real risk of facing legal action due to copyright infringement.”

“It speaks volumes because both bills were unanimously approved in four total hearings,” added Matt Holliday, Director of Government Relations, Edison State College. “Earlier this week, Senate Bill 236 was approved in the Community Affairs Committee with a unanimous vote. This brings the college one step closer to a new era.”

With the final committee hearings completed, both bills will proceed to the full House and Senate for final approval.

“We are confident of their passage and ultimate signature into law by Governor Scott sometime later this spring,” said Dr. Allbritten.
