Feb 15, 2008

Edison College District President Kenneth P. Walker today announces the appointment of Rep. Nicholas R. "Nick" Thompson as the college’s Special Assistant to the District President and Legal Counsel.

"We have wanted to fill this position for several years," said Walker. "Nick brings the winning combination of qualifications, experience, and interpersonal skills."

Thompson, a former lead prosecutor in the State Attorney’s Office, previously served in a governmental relations position at the University of Florida. He was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2006, representing District 73. Thompson holds a B.A. from Washington and Lee University, and J.D. from Nova Southeastern University.

His new responsibilities include directing the college’s governmental affairs and legislative advocacy programs, and serving as liaison with local, state, and federal officials. He will also administer and supervise legal matters for the college, including providing policy advice to Walker and other senior administrators.

"I am honored to receive the confidence of President Walker, and proud to serve Edison College," said Thompson. "This is a tremendous opportunity for me to apply my legal and legislative background to help the college grow and thrive for the benefit of the southwest Florida community."

Thompson is the son of retired circuit judge James R. "Jim" Thompson and wife, Cathy, of Fort Myers. Thompson and his wife, Chené, also live in Fort Myers.
