Jul 19, 2006

Edison College District President Kenneth P. Walker announces that Mary Lee Mann has been elected to lead the College’s District Board of Trustees for the 2006-07 fiscal year. Mann, who lives in Alva, was unanimously elected to the post at the Board’s June meeting. Fort Myers resident Mahlan Houghton was elected vice chairman.

"I am pleased that Mrs. Mann agreed to serve as Chair. She provides excellent guidance and leadership to the administration and board of Edison College", said Walker.

Mann served as an Edison College Trustee from 1991 to 1999, and was reappointed to the Board by Governor Bush in 2003. She was a founding member of the College’s Foundation for the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall in 1990, and later served as the group’s President. Following the merger of the College’s two direct support organizations, she has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Edison College Foundation, Inc. and was the founding chair of the successful Edison POPS @ Sunset concert held each October at the Lee campus.

Houghton has served on the Board since 2002, and was recently reappointed by the Governor for an additional four-year term ending May 31, 2010. He is a Communication Consultant for Globalnet Communications and member of the Rotary Club of Fort Myers.

The District Board of Trustees is charged with the responsibility for exercising maximum, local autonomy to establish rules, policies, and procedures to make certain the College is meeting the changing post-secondary educational needs of the community and is reflecting the community’s values in fulfilling the college mission. Edison College serves Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry and Lee Counties and is governed by a nine-member Board.
