Students Score Local Employment thanks to Edison State Job Fair

The Edison State College Job Fair proves that there are jobs available if one is patient and dedicated in pursuing employment opportunities.  Edison State students had the opportunity of participating in a job fair on October 14, 2009 at the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall.  Thirty vendors were available to visit with students about openings in each of their companies.  There were approximately 1,500 students in attendance the day of the job fair.

Student, Thierra Soivilien had three job offers and is now working at two establishments, Race Trac, and the Edison Ambassador Program.  Her third opportunity is pending, but she hopes to close the deal soon.  Like others in our grim economy, Soivilien has been searching for employment for over a year after having been laid off from two jobs. When asked about how she feels about so many offers, Thierra said, “I feel thankful and blessed.”

Mike Turner, President of Air Technology Inc. located in Naples hired two students from the job fair.  Michelle Zamniak, Assistant Head of Renaissance School and a student at Edison State College working on a degree in education said, “One week after the fair we conducted a group interview with about 8 candidates from Edison State College.  It went really well, we gave everyone a tour of our school and had a group discussion afterwards.  From this process 2 applicants rose to the top.”  They have now hired two students from the job fair.

Kevin Kennedy, Coordinator of Career Services is planning on a panel discussion on February 17, 2010.   Several keynote employers will share pertinent information on interviewing techniques, dressing for success, what they look for in an interview candidate, resumes and much more.  Students will have the opportunity of engaging in a question and answer period.  Kennedy is also planning another large Job Fair in the spring.
