Edison State District to go Tobacco Free

Jan 27, 2010

After careful consideration and unanimous support from students, faculty and staff leadership, College Administration asked the District Board of Trustees tonight to approve a recommendation to become tobacco-free.  The Board unanimously approved the recommendation.

“Edison State College is dedicated to promoting an environment of overall wellness for each person who visits our beautiful campuses and centers,” said Dr. Kenneth P. Walker President of Edison State College. “We are invested in academic achievement and developing life skills that promote these wellness ideals.”

Edison State’s tobacco-free initiative will apply to all students, staff, faculty, contractors, vendors and visitors. The policy applies to the entire Edison State College District - indoor facilities, campus grounds, walkways and parking lots. If approved, the policy will go into effect this May.

Cessation programs will be available for all Edison State students, faculty and staff who wish to quit using tobacco products. Committees have been formed on all campuses to identify programs and resources to assist with this effort.

Fewer and fewer employers, commercial entities and public facilities permit smoking and tobacco use. The Edison State College Charlotte Campus and Hendry/Glades Center enacted a tobacco-free policy in August of 2009 with great success.

Edison State College understands the process of achieving a 100 percent tobacco-free environment will take time and patience," said Dr. Noreen Thomas, Executive Vice President of Edison State College.  "It will be the responsibility of all staff, students and faculty members to help create an atmosphere of self-enforcement."
