Am I required to take a placement exam (P.E.R.T.)?

Once admitted to FSW, follow these steps to check if you need to take placement exams:

  • Login to your FSW Student Portal
  • Inside your Student Portal, click the "Student Academics" tab followed by "View Holds"
  • If you have an Assessment hold, you will need to resolve the hold by satisfying one of the requirements below.

Florida SouthWestern State College uses the Postsecondary Education Readiness Test (P.E.R.T.) as its entry Placement Test. The P.E.R.T. is used to determine placement in English, mathematics, and reading courses.

Testing Checklist

Prior to P.E.R.T. Testing:

  1. Apply to FSW
  2. Watch email for receipt of your FSW Student ID Number
  3. ACT/SAT Scores:
    • Submit your ACT/SAT scores earned within the last two years.
      1. If you did not select FSW as a recipient for your scores when you took the exam, you can follow the instructions in the links below to send the scores electronically (allow at least two weeks processing time):
      2. Visit one of the Testing Centers to submit your scores. You must have a photo ID and your ACT/SAT login information in order to print an official score report.
  4. College Transcripts:
    • It is possible that your college coursework could exempt you from taking the placement exam.
      • All college transcript(s) must be received and reviewed/evaluated by the Office of the Registrar in order for the Testing Center to evaluate if your coursework can satisfy required placement testing (Assessment hold).         Note: it can take 2 – 3 weeks after ALL college transcripts are received for the transcripts to be reviewed by a transcript evaluator. Your college transcript hold will be removed when the transcript is received. Submit your transcripts as soon as possible.
  5. If you are taking the P.E.R.T. for the second or third time, remediation is required prior to retesting.
  6. Make appointment to test

What to expect on Test Day:

  • You must provide a valid photo ID (driver’s license, student ID, passport, military ID).
  • Scratch paper and pens are provided.
  • Children are NOT allowed in testing labs and are NOT allowed to be left unattended in the testing facility.

Prohibited Items:

  • Electronic devices (Personal calculators, cell phones, iPads, or ear phones/buds)
  • Personal items such as sunglasses, watches, hats, handbags, backpacks, and/or umbrellas.
  • Food and beverages.


  • Labs are equipped with video surveillance and computers are monitored during testing. Students are not allowed to view other websites on testing computers. Testing Irregularities will result in test invalidation.
  • Students are not allowed to access other websites on testing computers.

Please Note:

  • Florida SouthWestern State College has a three P.E.R.T. attempt limit.
  • The PERT Placement Test is administered at all FSW testing locations (Collier, Charlotte, & Hendry/Glades Center.)
  • Students whose native language is not English or who have not graduated from US High Schools may be required to take the English proficiency test before placement testing is administered. To schedule an appointment for the English proficiency test (LOEP), call the Testing Center at 239-489-9237. For more information about LOEP testing visit the English for Academic Purposes website at
  • Florida SouthWestern State College charges $25.00 to administer P.E.R.T. test for Other Florida Colleges. The testing fee will be paid at the Cashier’s Office and presented to the Testing Staff before the test is administered.
