FSW Presents First Athletic Scholarship Awards

Apr 21, 2016

The Florida SouthWestern State College (FSW) Foundation and Suncoast Credit Union kept a promise made nearly a year ago to match scholarship donations for the college’s athletes. During the FSW baseball game on April 18, the first FSW Athletic Scholarship Awards were presented at the top of the fourth inning at City of Palms Park.  The recipients earned the scholarships based on academic excellence, community service and athletic performance.

The four winners are members of the FSW Softball team: Marta Fuentes, second base and outfield; Kayla Ranglawha, catcher and designated hitter; Courtney Gettins, pitcher; and Mikayla Werahiko, short stop.

“We said we would match Suncoast’s generous offer of $10,000 per year for scholarships for our student-athletes, and we have through our FSW Foundation,” said Dr. Jeff Allbritten, President, FSW. “We were pleased to present each of our four student-athletes with $10,000 scholarships. We continue to emphasize the importance of our student-athletes as students first.”

Suncoast strives to promote the education, health and emotional well-being of children in the communities we serve,” said Cindy Helton, Executive Director of the Suncoast Credit Union Foundation. “For this reason, we are proud to support not only excellence on the field, but also in the classroom through this scholarship program.”

The Florida SouthWestern State College athletic program is a member of the Florida College System Athletic Association (FCSAA) and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). The Buccaneers are one of 25 schools in the NJCAA Region 8 and are one of six schools in the Suncoast Conference. Florida SouthWestern State College currently supports four intercollegiate athletic programs (Baseball, Softball, Men’s Basketball, Women’s Basketball), with Volleyball coming in the fall of 2017.

Florida SouthWestern State College is Southwest Florida’s largest and one of the most affordable institutions of higher education. Annually serving nearly 22,000 students globally, FSW offers a variety of nationally-ranked, career-focused academic programs with two- and four-year degrees, and professional certifications. Students are also active in clubs and programs catered to their interests. FSW debuts its intercollegiate athletics program in January 2016. Visit www.FSW.edu for more information.
