Charlotte Campus PTK volunteers with Habitat for Humanity

Apr 8, 2011

PUNTA GORDA – Being inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society is a significant accomplishment worthy of praise. But Edison State College Charlotte Campus’ Alpha Tau Eta chapter deserves a few extra cheers for their continued volunteer work within the community.

The Charlotte Campus PTK recently celebrated its spring inductions with a ceremony on April 1 then promptly sprung early the next morning in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity Charlotte County. Nine PTK students along with advisor Dr. Christy Gilfert, who also serves as Associate Dean of Enrollment Management and Student Services for the Charlotte campus, spent several hours April 2 aiding the construction of a Port Charlotte home.

“Phi Theta Kappa always likes to give back to the community,” said PTK vice president Suzanne French, who organized the Habitat day. “For me Habitat for Humanity was something that I did before; it’s a great feeling to be able to build a house and have a family move in.”

The Edison students helped lay down tar paper for roofing, secured the dripping, adjusted flashing with the foundation and several other tasks. The club also participated in highway cleanup earlier this spring as service is one of the hallmarks of PTK, along with scholarship, leadership and fellowship.
