Campus Police

Committed to a Safe and Secure Environment

Florida SouthWestern State College (FSW) provides a healthy, safe, and secure environment through comprehensive and effective health, safety, and security programs that prioritize safety of students, faculty, staff, visitors and other members of the campus community. FSW maintains its own Campus Police Department (FSWPD) and provides protection for Florida SouthWestern State College’s Lee, Collier and Charlotte Campuses; and Hendry/Glades Curtis Center.

FSWPD maintains a staff of sworn uniformed police officers and non-sworn community service technicians which promotes more personal interaction with the college community. FSWPD is led by a Chief of Police who is a tenured law enforcement executive with 30 years of law enforcement experience and a Doctorate Degree in Human Services with a specialization in Criminal Justice. Leadership also includes a Captain of Operations and a Lieutenant position. The lieutenant position is responsible for providing supervision for FSWPD service College-wide to ensure a safe and secure environment for students, staff and visitors. Duties include overseeing the day-to-day operations and activities of the sergeants, police officers and support staff and acting in place of the Captain of Operations in his/her absence. In addition, FSW’s three first line supervisors (sergeants) oversee 24-hour coverage separated into three shifts of sworn uniformed police officers and non-sworn community service technicians on all campuses/center. FSWPD is comprised of 20 sworn and 17 non-sworn personnel.

FSWPD is committed to providing a safe, secure, and orderly environment in which learning, working, and administrative operations of the College have the opportunity to excel. The safety of our campuses is a cooperative effort of students, faculty, staff and visitors. Therefore, FSWPD mission is the commitment to the prevention of crime and the protection of life and property; the preservation of peace, order, and safety; the enforcement of laws; and the safeguarding of constitutional guarantees. FSWPD exists to serve all people with respect, fairness, and compassion with community service as the foundation. FSWPD members hold themselves to the highest standards of performance and ethics. To fulfill this mission, FSWPD is dedicated to providing a quality work environment and the development of its executives, supervisors, police officers, community service technicians, and staff through effective training and leadership.

More About the Campus Police Department

Accreditation

An accreditation program has long been recognized as a means of maintaining the highest standards of professionalism. The Campus Police Department was first accredited in 2024 and is committed to maintaining accreditation through one of the premier law enforcement programs in the United States known as Commission on Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (CFA). The rigorous multi-year review requires an in-depth inspection of the department's policies, procedures, and practices in organization, management, operations, and administration to ensure compliance with specific requirements and prescribed standards. Accreditation is a coveted award that symbolizes professionalism, excellence, and competence. The community we serve can take pride in their police department knowing that it represents the very best in law enforcement.

Accreditation increases the department's ability to prevent and control crime through more effective and efficient delivery of law enforcement services and provides additional benefits to the community to include:

  • Enhanced community understanding of the department and its role in the community as well as its goals and objectives. Community confidence in the policies and practices of the agency is increased.
  • Accreditation, in conjunction with the philosophy of community policing, commits the agency to a broad range of programs (such as crime prevention) that directly benefit the public. Interaction between the department and the community is improved.
  • Creates a forum in which police and community work together to control and prevent crime. This partnership will help the community to understand the challenges that confront law enforcement. Law enforcement will, in turn, receive clear direction from the community about its expectations. Thus, a common set of goals and objectives will be arrived at and implemented.

For more information on CFA, please visit https://flaccreditation.org/. Inquiries about the Department’s accreditation progress, may be directed to the Accreditation Manager at Timothy.Edeling@fsw.edu.

The use of bias based profiling enforcement activities by members of this Department is prohibited. Enforcement activities must be based on a standard of reasonable suspicion or probable cause as required by the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and statutory authority.
