Charlotte campus closed Friday to address water leak

Aug 4, 2011

PUNTA GORDA – The Charlotte campus of Edison State College will be closed Friday, Aug. 5 to address an underground water leak affecting the campus’ air conditioning system.

Edison State’s Lee and Collier campuses, as well as the Hendry/Glades Center remain unaffected. Online courses and registration are still available, and the Charlotte campus is scheduled to resume regular operating hours at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6.

“It’s a situation where our Physical Plant staff have to shut off the air conditioning system to address the leak,” Edison State spokesperson Eric McKinney said. “Fortunately the Summer B term is winding down, so any affect on students will be minimal.”

All Saturday classes and the 11:30 a.m. new student orientation will be held as scheduled. Those planning to visit the Charlotte campus Saturday can get updates on the reopening by phone (941-833-3930), the campus website (www.edison.edu/charlotte) or via Facebook (www.facebook.com/edisonstatecharlotte) after 6 p.m. Friday.

Edison staff first recognized the presence of a leak last Thursday and located the source underneath the James and Barbara Moore Observatory on Wednesday. Friday’s procedures include installing an underground shut off value to isolate the leak, which is estimated at 100 gallons per hour. There is no immediate timetable or estimated costs for completion of repairs.

Celebrating nearly 50 years of excellence, Edison State College is Southwest Florida’s largest, most accessible and most affordable institution of higher education. Proud to be tobacco-free, Edison State serves more than 24,000 students per year in five counties and online.  For more information please visit www.edison.edu.
