The Humanities Faculty to host Renowned Speaker

The Humanities faculty at Edison State College Lee Campus will host its inaugural colloquium this month: Education for a New Humanity.

Local and invited faculty from across the disciplines will present papers, panel discussions, talking circles and performances that examine how knowledge of their subject matter can best be used in the world today. The colloquium, which runs throughout February 16 and 17, is free and open to the public.

Dr. David Orr, professor of environmental studies and politics at Oberlin College, will deliver the keynote address on Friday, Feb. 17 at 1:30 p.m. in Building U-102 on the Edison State College Lee Campus.  Dr. Orr has earned several honorary degrees as well as numerous international awards including The Millennium Leadership Award from Global Green, the Bioneers Award and a Lyndhurst Prize acknowledging “persons of exceptional moral character, vision and energy.” His career as an author, scholar, teacher, speaker, and entrepreneur spans fields as diverse as ecological design, politics, and climate change. His work in sustainability has been praised by people as diverse as biologist E.O. Wilson and writer and farmer, Wendell Berry.

Internationally recognized musicians, Cancryn and Carlisle, will close the event on February 17 at 7 p.m. in the Rush Library Auditorium. Cancryn and Carlisle are passionately committed to the advancement of American/African American art song, cabaret song, and songs written by women composers. The duo began their collaboration in 1999 as participants in the Rome Festival in Italy and have maintained an active performance schedule while teaching at their respective universities and serving as artists in residence at the Banff Center for the Arts in Canada.
