Jun 20, 2013

JUNE 7, 2013 – NAPLES, FLA –The Edison State College Collier Campus Student Government Association (SGA) recently participated in the Florida Model Legislature in Tallahassee. The conference is a simulation of the State Legislature where students choose to play the role of senator, representative or press corp, and write, debate and vote on legislation while representing the people of their legislative districts.

The simulation was held in the Senate Chamber and the House of Representatives, and the students used the same equipment that is used by Senators and Representatives to vote on legislative issues.

Edison students who attended the conference were Hailey Griffin, Webster Duplessis, Joe G. Garita, Lupe Lopez, Natalie Artimez, Laura Prieto, Ashley Mc Phail, Oscar Santiago, Jacob Winge, and Vlad Alce.

“Florida Model Legislature is a great opportunity for our students to experience what it’s like to participate in various aspects of the legislative process,” said Sue Buntic, Collier Campus Coordinator, Student Life. “It gives them a greater understanding of how our elected officials represent us and an opportunity to see how our state capital works.”

Edison’s SGA students also received four awards for their participation, including the Most Distinguished Delegation Award for an outstanding performance as a team.  Garita and Prieto each received an Honorable Representative Award, and Santiago received the Honorable Press Corps Award.
