Jun 2, 2014

Today, Governor Rick Scott signed the 2014-15 state budget, which includes $6.5 million for renovation projects at Edison State College, which will become Florida SouthWestern State College on July 1.

“The funding for our renovation work means the science classes our students need will continue in an environment that helps them reach their educational and professional goals,” said Dr. Jeff Allbritten, President, Edison State College, soon to be Florida SouthWestern State College. “This allows us to keep pace with the current and future technological and scientific lab requirements.”

"We are very grateful for the leadership exhibited by our Southwest Florida legislative delegation", said Matthew Holliday, the college’s Director of Government Relations. "The inclusion of these funds in the budget and Governor Scott's approval will dramatically improve the quality of education our students receive in preparation to further Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education."

Most importantly, $5 million will support the complete renovation of Leonhardt Hall, a 47 year-old science and learning facility. Leonhardt Hall is the most heavily utilized science laboratory building across the college. The remaining $1.5 million will be dedicated to general maintenance for regular projects across the Lee Campus in Fort Myers.
