Edison College Remembers Robert Rauschenberg, With Gratitude

May 13, 2008

Edison College lost a tremendous friend overnight with the passing of world-renowned artist Robert Rauschenberg.

"Mr. Rauschenberg generously allowed us to name our Lee Campus Gallery of Fine Art in 2004 in his honor, and we will always be grateful," said District President Kenneth P. Walker. "He shared his enthusiasm for art with our students, and many of them had the privilege of meeting him personally. He will always be remembered with heartfelt appreciation at Edison College."

Rauschenberg's association with the College began in 1979 when the Edison College Foundation approached him to exhibit some of his works as part of the Gallery's inaugural year. Not only did he agree, he immediately called friends in the art world and encouraged their participation to help make the Gallery a success. Rauschenberg's first exhibition at Edison College was in February 1980 and included the opportunity to purchase signed limited edition prints and posters, with proceeds supporting Gallery operations. The tradition of donating prints and posters associated with a Rauschenberg Gallery exhibition continued over the years, generating an endowment currently valued at $575,000.

Ron Bishop, Director of the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery, said, "Bob Rauschenberg was a giant in the art world and a cornerstone of the 20th century. He was a friend of the Gallery and Edison College for nearly three decades, and his loss will be felt by his friends on campus, throughout Fort Myers and across the globe. Bob's lifelong compassion, his generosity and consciousness has touched millions of people world wide. We will all miss him."
