Edison College Sponsors Career Academy Summer Conference

Jun 5, 2008

Ninety seniors enrolled in career academies at Estero, East Lee, South Fort Myers and Ida Baker high schools will gain first-hand experience in their field of interest during Edison College's first annual Career Academy Summer Conference at the Lee Campus next week.

Those participating in the June 9 - 13 event have expressed interest in pursuing careers either in health sciences, or in law and public safety. Edison College and the Lee County School District have career pathway agreements that afford students completing Lee County's various high school academies the opportunity to enter related two- or four-year degree programs with advanced standing. Summer conference participants were selected by the high schools.

Students will sample college coursework through hands-on learning experiences. Those in the Law and Public Safety track will learn the basics of CPR and first aid, drive the EMS ambulance simulator, take a field trip to local criminal justice agencies, and participate in a mock crime scene investigation. The Health Sciences track will enable students to experience radiological imaging, heart catheter insertion, nursing procedures using SimMan models and much more. Teachers from the high school academies are also invited to participate.

A point system will enable students to compete for awards including Edison College scholarships, to be announced at a ceremony scheduled on Friday, June 13 at 1:00 p.m. in Taeni Hall, S-106 and 107. A detailed schedule of the week's activities may be accessed at http://www.edison.edu/viewdoc.php?id=6869.

Edison College serves a five-county area with campuses in Lee, Charlotte and Collier counties, a center serving Hendry/Glades counties, and through Edison Online. For additional information call 1-800-749-2322 or visit www.edison.edu.
