Mar 23, 2009

Edison State College now is approved by the State of Florida and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to begin offering a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing.

“The healthcare industry, especially nursing, is one of the few areas experiencing growth right now,” said Dr. Mary Lewis Associate Dean of Nursing at Edison State College. “The addition of the BSN at Edison State positions our students to become leaders and management level employees in the healthcare arena.”

The Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation finds that by the year 2014 there will be a need for an additional 34,340 BSN nurses in Florida, based on 2006 employment data.   This equates to annual average openings of 4,292.

“Healthcare technology is constantly advancing,” said Dr. Steve Atkins Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs. “Students earning a BSN at Edison will have the latest technology and critical thinking skills necessary to care for patients.”

"The BSN is an example of what our transition to a State College is all about,” said Dr. Kenneth Walker, Edison State College President.  “Edison State is committed to meeting the workforce needs in Southwest Florida.”

For 41 years Edison State has been the area leader in nursing education.  The associate degree in the nursing program at ESC enjoys an excellent reputation among local stakeholders, providing a solid foundation upon which to develop a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing program.

“Edison State is the area leader in educating those who provide Southwest Florida’s essential services,” said Lewis. “From nurses to ambulance drivers and firefighters, when you need an essential service, you are likely calling on someone educated at Edison State.”

The first BSN classes will begin in the Fall of 2009.  Courses will be a mix of classroom and on-line learning.
