The Lockmiller Early Learning Series at Edison State College Hosts Award Winning Author for Writer's Workshop

Sep 28, 2009

The Lockmiller Early Learning Series at Edison State College is hosting two seminars on the Lee Campus on October 17th.  The morning seminar features award winning poet and accomplished children’s author Lee Bennett Hopkins and a distinguished  literary panel including an illustrator, a New York  publishing representative, and an additional author. The afternoon seminar is a hands- on workshop geared to education students and youth educators.

The Lee Bennett Hopkins Writer’s Institute

The Lockmiller Early Learning Series is proud to announce the first annual presentation of the Lee Bennett Hopkins Writer’s Institute: ” Writing for Children: Inspiration to Publication”.  Lee Bennett Hopkins, a multiple award winning  author and anthologist now living in Cape Coral, will keynote the seminar.

Lee Bennett Hopkins is famous for his work as an anthologist, author, and avid promoter of bringing poetry to children. He has compiled more than 80 anthologies on subjects including animals, weather, school days, sports, U.S. history and geography, holidays, and embarrassing moments for young people. Though the subjects he chooses are outwardly ordinary, Hopkins treats them in eccentric ways. For example, Hoofbeats, Claws & Rippled Fins: Creature Poems, is about odd pets like tarantulas and how to love them. His anthologies have won widespread acclaim from book critics and include both well-known and newly published works.

Drawn to serious poetry rather than light verse, Hopkins wants children to feel the emotional impact of poetry. He wrote Pass the Poetry, Please!—which has been in print for over 25 years—to help teachers understand that poetry is “reachable, is teachable, and should come to children as naturally as breathing.”

Lee Bennett Hopkins will share the keynote role with illustrator Henry Cole. Mr. Cole has worked on more than 50 published books, and has authored and illustrated several on his own. The two will be joined in a panel discussion and question and answer period with editor Tamar Brazis of the publishing company Abrams in New York, and author Sylvia Andrews. All authors will be available for book signings after the seminar.

The Lee Bennett Hopkins Writers institute will be held on the morning of October 17th in the Rush Auditorium of Edison State College’s Lee Campus from 9:00am to 12:00pm. Seating capacity is limited, so register early if you plan to attend.

Making Books with Children: Hands-on Workshops

Sylvia Andrews, a children’s author, will lead a workshop on writing with children. Workshops on “Supporting Children as Authors”, and “Making Books with Infants and Toddlers” will also be presented.  Additionally, the Early Learning Coalition will have a poster presentation of “Stages of Children’s Writing”.
