Edison College hosts 'Go Higher Get Accepted' events

Apr 12, 2007

Research shows that education or training after high school pays off in lifelong benefits, including higher wages, better job opportunities and even a longer life span. To help high school seniors make the transition to college, Edison College will host two “Go Higher–Get Accepted” events this month.

The events will offer seniors hands-on help to assess their career goals and the type of degree they need to achieve them. There will also be help with financial aid, scholarships, and FACTS.org, the state’s student advising website.

Florida Community College Chancellor David Armstrong says, “We encourage every high school senior to enroll in their local community college. A college education leads to an outstanding career and higher quality of life, and community colleges are a great opportunity for all Florida students to get a quality education at an affordable price.”

Armstrong also pointed out that students who qualify for a Medallion level Bright Futures scholarship will have 100 percent of their tuition paid for at a community college.

Edison College’s “Go Higher–Get Accepted” events will take place on Thursday, April 19 from 6 – 8 p.m. One event will be held in the media center of South Fort Myers High School, 14020 Plantation Rd., Fort Myers. The other event will be held in the media center of North Fort Myers High School, 5000 Orange Grove Blvd., North Fort Myers.

The executive director of FACTS.org, Connie Graunke, says, “Our goal is for every senior to have received a letter of acceptance from a college or university by the time they walk across the stage to get a high school diploma.”

For more information on the events, call the Edison College Student Development Office at 239-489-9054. For more information on the “Go Higher–Get Accepted” campaign and a complete listing of events, visit www.FACTS.org.
