PUNTA GORDA – Edison State College Charlotte Campus will host a free viewing of the widely acclaimed documentary Waiting for Superman at 4 p.m. on Feb. 3 in the auditorium.

Waiting for Superman, which is schedule for DVD release Feb. 15, analyzes the challenges in American public education by following five students navigating their way through various urban public school. The issue of school choice becomes a topic of debate for the students and their families.

Directed by Academy Award winner Davis Guggenheim, the film received the Audience Award for best documentary at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and 2011 Critics’ Choice Awards.

“This is more than an Important Documentary: it is engaging and, finally, enraging — as captivating as any Superman movie, and as poignant as a child's plea for help,” said Time reporter, Richard Corliss, “Davis Guggenheim's edifying and heartbreaking new documentary, says that our future depends on good teachers.”

The film became the topic of discussion on NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams in October 2010. The town hall discussion featured teachers from across the country. The documentary also features former Washington D.C. Public Schools Chief Michelle Rhee, who now serves as an informational education advisor to Florida Governor Rick Scott.
