Edison State College Professor Jo Ann Lewin Recognized by Florida State Board of Education

Edison State College Professor JoAnn Lewin received special recognition by the Florida State Board of Education recently for her role in developing the Postsecondary Education Readiness Test (PERT).  PERT is slated to become Florida’s new college placement testing program used to determine a student’s readiness to take college-level classes.

Professor Lewin is the Chair of the Math Department at Edison State College, Lee Campus and is very involved in developing state educational standards.

“I think it’s my responsibility as an educator to serve on various committees to keep up to speed with educational developments in our state,” explained Lewin.  “It has been interesting to be a part of the team actually shaping and enhancing the standards of our state system.”

The test was developed using collaborative input from the Florida Department of Education, Florida State College and University faculty members and administrators.  Together the group developed a common definition of “college readiness.”   The definition includes specific expectations of what students need to know to be successful in their first college-level English and math classes. The FDOE plans to implement PERT state-wide by spring 2011.

“Edison State places a high value on this type of faculty participation,” said Dr. Theo Koupelis, Associate Dean of Math and Sciences.  “We are fortunate to have faculty like Professor Lewin who is a change agent for the betterment of Florida’s education system.”
