FSW's Commitment

Our Commitment to Academic Excellence, Student Opportunity, and Public Accountability

Florida SouthWestern State College (FSW) is committed to providing an affordable, rigorous education that prepares students for meaningful careers, continued learning, engaged citizenship, and lives of service. Our responsibility extends to the families, employers, communities, and taxpayers who place their trust in public higher education.

Guided by our values of student success, integrity, intellectual inquiry, and academic rigor, FSW affirms the following commitments.

Accessible Education and Transparent Admissions

FSW’s open-door mission creates opportunities for students with a broad range of educational backgrounds and goals. Access is accompanied by clear expectations for academic preparation, progress, and achievement.

We are committed to communicating admission requirements, program prerequisites, selection criteria, costs, and graduation requirements clearly. Admission to programs with additional eligibility requirements will be based on published criteria, demonstrated qualifications, and applicable requirements, without unlawful preferences. Students and families should have the information they need to make informed educational decisions.

Free Expression, Open Inquiry, and Campus Safety

FSW affirms that higher education depends on the freedom to ask questions, examine evidence, debate ideas, and consider competing viewpoints. We support lawful expression and an academic environment in which students and employees can engage in thoughtful inquiry and constructive discourse.

We uphold these freedoms while protecting the safety of our college community and the continuity of instruction and operations. Threats, unlawful harassment, and conduct that materially disrupts College activities will be addressed through established procedures, consistent with applicable law and individual rights.

Qualified Faculty and Staff and Intellectual Independence

Student success depends on knowledgeable faculty and capable staff. FSW is committed to employment decisions grounded in professional qualifications, relevant expertise, demonstrated performance, and institutional needs, without ideological tests or unlawful preferences.

Teaching and learning should encourage students to evaluate information, distinguish evidence from opinion, communicate effectively, and reach informed conclusions. Academic work should be evaluated on its quality and achievement of learning outcomes, without requiring agreement with a particular viewpoint.

Affordability, Fiscal Responsibility, and Student Outcomes

FSW is committed to helping students pursue their educational goals at a reasonable cost and complete their programs efficiently. Clear information about tuition, fees, financial assistance, academic pathways, and transfer opportunities supports informed planning and responsible borrowing.

As stewards of public resources, we are committed to sound financial management and continuous improvement. We will use evidence about student learning, retention, completion, transfer, licensure, and employment, as appropriate, to evaluate effectiveness and guide improvements. Our focus is on educational opportunities that deliver lasting value to students and the communities we serve.

Academic Rigor, Meaningful Assessment, and Responsible AI Use

An FSW credential should represent demonstrated knowledge and skill. We are committed to challenging curricula, meaningful assessments, and grading that accurately reflects student achievement. Academic standards must remain strong as teaching methods and technologies evolve.

Artificial intelligence offers opportunities to enhance learning and workplace preparation. Its use must preserve academic integrity, privacy, and accountability. Faculty should communicate when and how AI may be used, and students remain responsible for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of submitted work. Assessment must continue to establish what students themselves understand and can do.

Institutional Integrity, Transparency, and Security

FSW is committed to responsible governance, public accountability, and compliance with applicable state and federal requirements. Protecting public trust requires careful stewardship of College funds, information, academic programs, and partnerships.

We will maintain safeguards and oversight appropriate to institutional activities, including foreign gifts and agreements, external relationships, information security, and the protection of sensitive data. Partnerships must support FSW’s educational mission and preserve institutional independence.

Serving Southwest Florida and Preparing Students for the Future

FSW’s public mission centers on expanding opportunity for the people of Southwest Florida and contributing to Florida’s prosperity. We are committed to helping students build the knowledge and skills needed for employment, career advancement, further education, and civic participation.

Through collaboration with employers, schools, universities, and community partners, we will strengthen pathways connecting education with regional needs. Certificates, associate degrees, bachelor’s degrees, and transfer opportunities provide multiple routes to achievement.

Our commitment is sustained through the daily work of teaching, supporting students, evaluating results, and improving. By maintaining high expectations and accessible pathways, FSW will continue to advance student opportunity, strengthen our communities, and earn the public’s trust.
