FSW's Whitmer Speaker for Medical Practices Workshop

Florida SouthWestern State College’s (FSW) School of Health Professions professor Elizabeth Whitmer was the speaker for an ICD-10 CM workshop for medical practices in the southwest Florida community. The August 11 workshop, held on FSW’s Thomas Edison (Lee) campus in Fort Myers, was sponsored by Radiology Regional Center. Whitmer, a faculty member for the Health Information Technology Program at FSW, is also a Certified ICD-10 CM/PCS Trainer/Ambassador.

“We are pleased to be able to sponsor local educational opportunities for the staff of medical practices,” states Shawn Elliott, Director of Business Development for Radiology Regional Center. “The challenges of successful coding to guarantee maximum claims reimbursement have grown significantly in recent years, and we want to provide our professionals with every opportunity to learn about changes and advancements as they are available.”

The workshop covered the new ICD-10 Clinical Modification (CM) classification system. Participants learned about the organizational and structural changes in ICD-10 CM as well as the features, conventions and guidelines. General Equivalence Mapping and case examples were discussed.
