Orientation & Advising Sessions

COVID-19 Orientation Update:

  • Orientations have been transitioned to an online format.
  • Online Orientation will provide necessary information for you to be successful at FSW and begin your college journey.
  • All First-Time in College students are required to complete Online Orientation prior to being able to register for classes. First-Time in College includes incoming freshman and any graduating high school senior with previous dual enrollment credit from FSW.

Once you are Orientation ready, an email with the Online Orientation instructions will be shared with you. You will be able to sign-up for an Orientation date and the Online Orientation link will be shared with you by the date you select. Following completion of Online Orientation, you will then be able to register for classes.

Planning to Start in a Different Term Than Summer 2020?

Summer classes begin in May and June. To change the date you will start classes, complete the Update Entry Term of Existing Application form at using the email address you used to create your admissions application.

About Orientation & Advising Sessions

Congratulations on your admission to FSW! We look forward to welcoming you to the Buccaneer family! Orientation is designed to connect you with the campus, culture, people, and places that you will call home for the next 2-4 years as you continue your education.

Your comprehensive Orientation & Advising Session will last approximately 4 hours and will provide you with:

  • An overview of essential information to ensure a smooth start at FSW.
    • By reviewing academic calendars, important deadlines, and tuition costs.
  • An introduction to campus resources and support services.
  • An academic advising session and personalized course recommendations for your first semester.
  • Assistance navigating the FSW Student Portal including assistance with course registration.
  • The opportunity to receive your BUC Card (Student ID Card).

All first-time in college* students, will receive an email to schedule a required Orientation & Advising Session once they have satisfied all registration requirements (called "Holds"). To check your eligibility and verify you have satisfied all registration requirements, please follow the steps outlined in "Before You Attend an Orientation & Advising Session" below.

Before You Attend an Orientation & Advising Session

Set up your FSW Student Portal

  • Inside your Student Portal, click the "Student Academics" tab followed by "View Holds."
  • This page shows a list of your registration requirements known as "holds."
  • You will need to resolve any holds other than Orientation & Advising before you will receive an email with a private link to register for the Session.
  • Any Orientation or Advising holds will be resolved at this Session.

Plan Ahead

  • Schedule your Orientation & Advising Session early - the earlier you attend Orientation the sooner you can register for classes. Course registration will take place during your Orientation & Advising Session.
  • Orientation & Advising is required for all first-time in college students, including those who are out-of-area/state.

Tips for a Successful Orientation Day

  • Arrive early with enough time to check-in for your Orientation & Advising Session.
  • Family and friends are welcome to attend the information portion of Orientation; however, the advising and course registration portion is for the student only.
  • The Orientation & Advising Session is approximately 4 hours in length and may include a walking tour of campus so be sure to wear comfortable shoes.
  • Lunch is not provided during Orientation; students should feel free to bring a snack and beverage.
