About Orientation & Advising Sessions

Congratulations on your admission to FSW! We look forward to welcoming you to the Buccaneer family! Orientation is a 4-hour program designed to connect you with the campus, culture, people, and places that you will call home for the next 2-4 years as you continue your education.

All first-time in college* students (including out-of-area/state), will receive an email (sent to the email address you indicated on your application for admission to FSW) to schedule a required Orientation & Advising Session once you have satisfied all registration requirements (called “Holds”). The email will be sent within 7-14 days of resolving any holds (other than Orientation and/or Advising Holds).

To check your eligibility and verify you have satisfied all registration requirements, please follow the steps outlined in "Before You Attend an Orientation & Advising Session" below. Your comprehensive Orientation & Advising Session will last approximately 4 hours and will provide you with:

*First-Time in college includes incoming freshman and any graduating high school senior with previous dual enrollment credit from FSW. All First-Time in College students are required to attend an Orientation session prior to being able to register for classes.

Plan for Your Orientation & Advising Session

Plan Ahead for Orientation

  • Set up your FSW Student Portal at my.fsw.edu
    • Inside your Student Portal, click the "Student Academics" tab followed by "View Holds"
    • This page shows a list of your registration requirements known as "holds"
    • You will need to resolve any holds other than Orientation & Advising before you will receive an email with a private link to register for the Session.
Any Orientation or Advising holds will be resolved at this Session.
  • Schedule your Orientation & Advising Session early - the earlier you attend Orientation the sooner you can register for classes. Course registration will take place during your Orientation & Advising Session.
  • Orientation & Advising is required for all first-time in college students, including those who are out-of-area/state.

Tips for a Successful Orientation Day

  • Arrive early with enough time to check-in for your Orientation & Advising Session. Once the session has started, no late entry is permitted
  • Keep in mind that the Orientation & Advising Session is for the student only
  • The Orientation & Advising Session is approximately 4 hours in length and may include a walking tour of campus so be sure to wear comfortable shoes
  • Lunch is not provided during Orientation; students should feel free to bring a snack and beverage

How to Schedule Your Orientation & Advising Session

Students are required to schedule their Orientation & Advising Session using FSW’s online scheduling system. As a first-time in college* student, you will receive an email (sent to the email address you indicated on your application for admission to FSW) to schedule a required Orientation & Advising Session once you have satisfied all registration requirements (called “Holds”). The email will be sent within 7-14 days of resolving any holds (other than Orientation and/or Advising Holds).

*First time in college includes incoming freshman and any graduating high school senior with previous dual enrollment credit from FSW.

The Office of Student Engagement does not assign Orientation dates to students. It is the students’ responsibility to schedule their Orientation & Advising Session.

Why haven't I received the email to register for a Session?

The email to register for the Orientation & Advising Session will be sent to the email address you used to apply for admission to FSW within 7-14 days of resolving any holds other than Orientation & Advising. If you have not received the email within this timeframe, one of these other situations may apply:

  • You are a transfer, readmit, non-degree, international, dual enrollment, or transient (guest) student.
    • More information can be found in the section entitled "Student Types?"
  • Your registration holds are not resolved.
    • Visit the “View Holds” page in your FSW Student Portal to see if there are holds that need to be resolved. Any Orientation or Advising holds will be resolved at the Orientation & Advising Session.
  • You are checking the wrong email address.
    • This link will be sent to the email address you indicated on your application for admission to FSW.

If you feel you should have received the Orientation & Advising Session registration email but cannot find it in your inbox or junk mail, please contact us at to have your file re-evaluated and the email resent if applicable.

Not a First Time in College Student?

Transfer, Readmit (Returning), Non-Degree, Dual Enrollment, or Transient (guest) students are not required to attend an Orientation & Advising Session and will not have an Orientation hold. As one of these students, you may; however, have an Advising hold that can be resolved by scheduling an appointment with an Academic Advisor after you follow the steps for "Before You Attend an Orientation & Advising Session" section (above) to resolve any holds other than Advising.

International student will receive specific instructions from the Center of International Education.
