The next time a fire engine pulls into a neighborhood or a rescue crew responds to a crash, one of the first responders on scene could be among the 41 students set to graduate next month from Florida SouthWestern State College’s Fire Fighter I/II Career Certificate program. “The training we received was top notch,” said student Adam Johnson, a former Coast Guard member now pursuing a career as a firefighter through FSW. “I am humbled by the quality of instructors who go out of their way to train the next generation of firefighters. Their dedication is a testament to the fire service’s commitment to upholding the standards of those who serve the local community.” The graduation ceremony will recognize the dedication and hard work required to complete one of Southwest Florida’s premier firefighter training programs. Hosted at the award-winning North Collier Fire Training Center, the program combines rigorous classroom instruction with hands-on training designed to prepare students for the realities of emergency response. “The North Collier Fire Academy is one of a kind, with dedicated instructors who enforce a superior standard for discipline, integrity, hard work and competency in the skills necessary to be a firefighter,” said Brandon Valdez, a 1st Lt. in the Army National Guard and program instructor. “There’s no question why this academy is a three-time winner of Florida’s Fire Service Training and Education Provider of the Year.” The North Collier Fire Training Center serves as a vital community resource, providing educational excellence and professional mentorship while preparing the next generation of emergency service providers. Through its partnership with FSW, the academy offers students advanced career pathways, practical training opportunities and meaningful experiences in community service and public safety outreach. “Watching them grow from day one into the skilled firefighters they are today has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my role as supervisor,” said Michael Jimenez, fire academy supervisor. “Their work ethic, ability to handle the demands of the curriculum and passion for service are truly commendable. They have earned their place in this profession.” Students complete live-fire exercises, rescue simulations, apparatus operations and practical skills training in realistic burn towers and emergency scenarios. These immersive experiences help graduates develop the technical knowledge, physical endurance and decision-making skills expected of today’s firefighters. “My time there was extremely intense in the best way possible,” said Lloyd Montgomery, who is also enrolled in FSW’s EMT program. “It was the hardest thing I have ever had to do, both mentally and physically, and I do not regret a thing. It was a wonderful experience, and my instructors — who are active firefighters — made a lasting impact on me. I know they will continue to support me in my career path.” As the graduates prepare to cross the stage, their focus is already shifting beyond the ceremony to the communities they hope to serve. “Having already responded to emergencies in the Coast Guard, I can build upon those lessons,” Johnson said. “However, I know each situation is different. I can rely on the training we received to remain calm and work as a team when responding to emergencies.” As they prepare to serve communities across Southwest Florida, the students hope their journey encourages others to take the first step toward a career in public service. “Just do it,” said Montgomery. “It’s not just a program. It’s a life-changing experience. It tests you every day, both in and out of class, and it teaches you to be honest and hardworking. If you have the determination to better yourself and serve others, this is for you.”
