Emergency Medical Technology (AS)

Program Details

The Emergency Medical Services Technology Program is designed to prepare the student to become a competent entry-level Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and/or Paramedic. The Associate in Science Degree in Emergency Medical Services Technology consists of three sequential components. Successful completion of each component will fulfill requirements for the affiliated Florida State certification. Students looking to continue their education will be eligible for admission into the Florida SouthWestern State College Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Public Safety Administration.

Articulation Pathways

EMT Career Pathway

To be eligible for articulation, the student must show evidence of their current Clear/Active EMT licensure. Upon program approval, verification of current Florida EMT license, and review of previous coursework, professional articulation credit may be assigned for up to 12 credits in the final semester of the AS EMST degree. All required general education coursework must be completed prior to awarding articulated credit and the AS Emergency Medical Services Technology degree.

Paramedic Career Pathway

To be eligible for articulation, the student must show evidence of their current Clear/Active Paramedic licensure. Upon program approval, verification of current Florida Paramedic license and review of previous coursework professional articulation credit may be assigned for up to 38 credits in the final semester of the AS EMST degree. All required general education coursework must be completed prior to awarding articulated credit and the AS Emergency Medical Services Technology degree.

Students must successfully complete a minimum of 25 percent (19 credits) of the required degree at Florida SouthWestern State College

Limited Admission Program

The EMS certificate programs (EMT and Paramedic) are limited admission, requiring completion of the Application for EMS Programs, and acceptance into the program by the College EMS department.

Advanced Placement

Advanced placement is any process where a program formally recognizes prior learning of a student and applies that recognition toward meeting the program requirements.

The Florida SouthWestern State College Paramedic Certificate Program, Emergency Medical Technical Certificate Program, and the A.S. Emergency Medical Services Program does not participate in the process of Advanced Placement.

Part One - Emergency Medical Technician - Basic Certificate

(12 credit hours) Cert Emt Program

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program is one semester and 12 college credit hours in length, offered in the fall, spring, and summer semesters.

The program includes lecture hours, laboratory hours, hospital clinicals, and internship/ride time experience. Students are responsible for transportation to and from the clinical sites. Upon successful completion of this program, students will receive a college completion certificate and the necessary paperwork required to apply for both Florida EMT and National Registry certifications.

Part Two - Paramedic Certificate

(42 credit hours) Paramedic Certificate

Required for Florida EMT-Paramedic Certification

The Paramedic Certificate Program is designed to prepare competent entry-level Paramedics in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains with or without exit points at the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician and/or Emergency Medical Technician, and/or Emergency Medical Responder levels. The program is four semesters and 42 college credit hours

During the Paramedic Certificate Program, students will be required to complete clinical rotations with local hospitals. These rotations are in addition to scheduled class/ laboratory/clinical/internship hours.

To be eligible to sit for the Florida Paramedic exam, the student must be currently certified as a Florida EMT and successfully complete the Paramedic Certificate Program. The program includes lecture hours, laboratory hours, hospital clinicals, operating room rotations, and internship/ride time experience. Students are responsible for transportation to and from the clinical/internship sites. Specific information will be provided the first week of class. Upon successful completion of this program, students will receive a college completion certificate and the necessary paperwork required to apply for Florida Paramedic certification.

Part Three - Emergency Medical Services Technology, AS

(73 credit hours)

General Education requirements may be completed concurrently with career core requirements, or following successful Florida Paramedic Certification.
