Demonstration of College-Level Communication and Computation

In order to meet the prerequisite requirements for some courses at Florida SouthWestern State College, you will need to demonstrate readiness for college–level communication and/or computation. Below are the ways you can demonstrate college readiness in each area.

Readiness for college-level communication and computation both can be shown by either one of the following:

  • Demonstration of active–duty status in any branch of the United States Armed Services. (F.S. 1008.30(4)(a))

  • Previously earned an Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, Associate in Applied Science, or bachelor's degree.
  • Achievement of an accelerated credit program passing score in the areas of reading, writing, and/or math. (F.S. 1007.27)

Readiness for college–level communication only can be shown by proof of one the following for reading and one of the following for writing:

  • Completion of two (2) courses in the areas of humanities, social sciences, or natural sciences with grades of "C" or higher.

  • Completion of an exit–level developmental course in reading and writing with a grade of “C” or higher.

    • Submit your official transcripts from all previously attended colleges or universities to the Office of the Registrar for evaluation of college credits.
  • Evidence of previous placement in ENC1101 English Composition I or ENC1102 English Composition II.
  • Proof of college–level reading and writing scores via a common placement. Read how to Resolve the Assessment Hold Via Test Scores.
  • Proof of meeting or exceeding the standard score on any of the authorized alternative assessments for reading and writing.

Readiness for college-level computation only can be shown by the proof of one of the following:

  • Completion with a grade of "C" or higher of an exit–level developmental course in math.
  • Evidence of previous placement into a college–level math course.

  • Proof of meeting or exceeding the standard score on any of the authorized alternative assessments for math.
