If you do not have to take a placement test, you are exempt. Generally speaking, students who are trying to register for an English or math course must demonstrate to the State of Florida competency in the areas of Reading, Writing, and Mathematics at the college level.
There are three ways to be exempt from testing:
- You completed your high school in the State of Florida
- You are transferring coursework from another college or university
- You have obtained an associate's, bachelor’s, or master’s degree already
High School in Florida
You may be exempt from taking the placement test if both following statements are true:
Four Years of High School in Florida
If you entered the 9th grade in a Florida public high school in the 2003–2004 school year or a year thereafter and graduated in the 12th grade, uninterrupted.
You graduated, achieving a Standard High School Diploma.
ACTION: Please send an official transcript to our Office of Admissions.
Previous Educational Coursework
You may be exempt from taking the placement test if the following is true:
Course Credits from Another Institution
- The institution has to be regionally accredited.
- The Office of the Registrar must evaluate your transcripts and articulate the courses.
- Completion of two (2) courses in the areas of humanities, social sciences, or natural sciences with grades of “C” or higher. For a list of appropriate college-level courses, visit the General Education Program Guide webpage.
- Previously placed into an equivalent FSW English Composition or math course.
- Previously placed into an FSW English Composition or math course.
- Completion of an exit-level developmental course in Reading, Writing, or Math with a grade of “C” or higher.
- Successful completion of EAP 1500, EAP 1520, EAP 1540, and EAP 1560 with a “C” or higher.

Previous College Degree
You may be exempt from taking the placement test if the following is true:
Previously Obtained Degree
- The institution has to be regionally accredited.
- The Office of the Registrar must evaluate your transcripts.
- Previously earned an Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, Associate in Applied Science, bachelor’s, or master’s degree.
